2.2: Continuous & Perfect Tenses: Expressing complex timing.
Excellent. Now we are entering the “Time Travel” phase of grammar. In Lesson 2.1, we covered the “Simple” tenses (actions that happen, happened, or will happen).
In Lesson 2.2, we focus on actions that are ongoing (Continuous) or actions that have a connection between the past and the present (Perfect). This is where your students will learn to sound truly fluent.
Lesson 2.2: Continuous & Perfect Tenses
Goal: To describe actions that are “in progress” or actions that have been completed in relation to now.
🌊 1. The Continuous Tenses (The “In-Progress” Actions)
Use these when an action is happening over a period of time. The secret ingredient is always -ing.
A. Present Continuous (Happening RIGHT NOW)
- Formula: am/is/are + [Verb + ing]
- Example: I am teaching right now.
- Example: The students are listening to the lesson.
B. Past Continuous (Was happening in the past)
- Formula: was/were + [Verb + ing]
- Example: I was sleeping when the phone rang.
- Example: They were playing cricket all afternoon.
✅ 2. The Perfect Tenses (The “Connection” Actions)
These are used for actions that are finished but still matter now. This is often the hardest part for students, so use clear examples!
A. Present Perfect (Past action, Present result)
- Formula: have/has + [Past Participle]
- Example: I have finished my homework. (Result: My homework is done now).
- Example: She has lived in Nagapattinam for ten years. (Result: She still lives there).
B. Past Perfect (The “Past of the Past”)
- Formula: had + [Past Participle]
- Use this when two things happened in the past, and you want to show which one happened first.
- Example: The bus had left before I reached the station. (First: Bus left. Second: I reached).
🧪 The “Time Marker” Cheat Sheet
Tell your students to look for these “clues” in a sentence:
| Tense | Look for these words… | Example |
| Continuous | now, at the moment, while | I am studying now. |
| Perfect | already, yet, since, for | I have already eaten. |
