1.3: Adjectives & Adverbs: Adding color and detail.
Goal: To describe things (nouns) and actions (verbs) with precision and style.
🎨 1. Adjectives (The Noun Painters)
An Adjective is a word that describes or modifies a Noun or a Pronoun. It tells us “Which one?”, “What kind?”, or “How many?”.
- What Kind? (Quality): A brave soldier, a beautiful garden.
- How Many? (Quantity): Three students, several books.
- Which One? (Demonstrative): That car, these apples.
💡 St. Michael’s Tip: Adjectives usually come before the noun (The blue sky) or after a linking verb (The sky is blue).
⚡ 2. Adverbs (The Verb Enhancers)
An Adverb is a word that describes a Verb, an Adjective, or even another Adverb. It usually tells us “How?”, “When?”, “Where?”, or “To what extent?”.
- How? (Manner): He ran quickly. (Describes the verb ran)
- When? (Time): We will leave soon. (Describes when we leave)
- Where? (Place): Put the book there. (Describes where to put it)
- To what extent? (Degree): She is very tall. (Describes the adjective tall)
🔍 Easy Rule: Many adverbs end in -ly (slowly, happily, carefully), but not all of them (fast, now, everywhere)!
⚖️ Adjective vs. Adverb: The Comparison
Students often confuse these two. Use this table in your LearnPress lesson to help them distinguish:
| Word Type | Modifies… | Examples | Sentence |
| Adjective | Noun / Pronoun | Quiet, Fast, Smart | The quiet girl studied. |
