Lesson 1.2: Tutor vs. Ghostwriter: How to Stay Academic-Honest
🧐 The Big Question
Now that you know AI is a “guessing machine,” you have a choice to make. Do you use it as a Tutor or as a Ghostwriter?
- A Ghostwriter does the work for you. You learn nothing, and you might get in trouble.
- A Tutor helps you do the work. You get smarter, faster, and your grades improve because you actually understand the topic.
🟢 Using AI as a Tutor (The “Green Zone”)
This is when you use AI to strengthen your brain. It is like having a teacher available 24/7.
Good things to ask AI:
- “Explain this again:” “I don’t understand the Water Cycle. Can you explain it using a sports analogy?”
- “Give me a hint:” “I’m stuck on this math problem. Don’t give me the answer, but tell me what the first step should be.”
- “Quiz me:” “I have a history test on the Industrial Revolution tomorrow. Ask me 5 questions to see if I’m ready.”
🔴 Using AI as a Ghostwriter (The “Red Zone”)
This is when you use AI to skip the thinking. This is usually considered cheating in school.
Bad things to ask AI:
- “Write my essay:” “Write a 500-word essay on Romeo and Juliet for me.” (Teachers can often tell when a machine wrote your work!)
- “Solve this for me:” “What is the answer to question 4 on page 52?”
- “Summarize and replace:” Using AI to summarize a book so you don’t have to read it at all.
⚖️ The “Brain Test”
Before you use AI for homework, ask yourself this one question:
“If the AI disappeared right now, would I still know how to do this?”
- If the answer is YES, you are using it as a tool.
- If the answer is NO, the AI is doing your thinking for you.
🚀 Try This: The “Socratic Tutor” Prompt
Copy and paste this into an AI (like ChatGPT or Gemini) to turn it into a perfect tutor:
“I am a [Your Grade] student studying [Subject]. I want to learn [Topic]. Please act as a tutor. Do not give me the answers. Instead, ask me questions one by one to help me find the answer myself.”
Example: “I am a 9th-grade student studying Biology. I want to learn about Mitochondria. Please act as a tutor. Do not give me the answers. Instead, ask me questions one by one to help me find the answer myself.”
