Riding the Waves: A Historic First for St. Michael’s Akademy
Pioneering the Spirit of Adventure in Nagappattinam
The shores of Nagappattinam witnessed a historic milestone on 15 October 2025, as six courageous boys from St. Michael’s Akademy stepped onto surfboards for the first time. Participating in the District Level Surfing Tournament, our students represented the school in an event that marked the very first surfing competition ever conducted in our district.
The tournament, conducted by the Surfing Federation of India and organized by the Nagappattinam District Collectorate, provided a platform for our young athletes to test their mettle against the power of the ocean.
From the School Pond to the Open Sea
While this was the first time our students ventured into the sea for a competitive sport, they were far from unprepared. Our boys drew upon rigorous training previously completed in our school pond, where they mastered swimming and the art of rowing boats.
By combining the discipline of swimming with the balance and rhythmic knowledge of rowing, our students quickly decoded the “knack” of tackling the waves. Their ability to adapt their existing sporting knowledge to the unpredictable nature of the surf was a proud moment for our coaching staff and the entire school community.
A Golden Opportunity for K. Balachandar
The highlight of the event was the exceptional performance of K. Balachandar (Grade 8). Competing in the Under-14 category, Balachandar demonstrated remarkable composure and skill, successfully qualifying for advanced opportunities.
In a massive achievement, Balachandar has won the prestigious opportunity to be sponsored by the Government of Tamil Nadu for specialized training in Paddle Surfing.
To mark this incredible feat, he also had the distinct honor of meeting the Honorable Deputy Chief Minister, who commended his dedication to this emerging sport.
